Blurry Memories - Screen

Spring, 2024

In my bitter sweet relationship with my grandfather, if the lamp is my resentment towards him, the screen divider is my appreciation of him as an artist. I chose a landscape imagery as a starting point, inspired by my grandfather’s paintings. I wanted the audience to experience his beautiful interpretation of a landscape. However, I came to a thought that my landscape does not have to bean iteration of his paintings.

In my paintings, I fill up the entire paper by breaking down the dimensions into different colors and playing with the negative space. If his way of expressing emptiness is through the untouched areas of the paper, perhaps my method of expressing emptiness can be through the absence of color. The different colors in this image were represented with different knit structures. In doing so, I was able to focus on the dynamic of various transparencies and textures.

The wooden frame is built in collaboration with Sage Lou, an Industrial Designer and a RISD Alumni. She custom designed the frame to match the dimensions of the fabric shade.
