Blurry Memories - Pagoda

Spring, 2024

The lamps were inspired by the shape of a pagoda, a rock tower, in the garden of my grandfather’s home. In Buddhist context, the pagoda is a placeholder/a protection for relics. I wanted the form of this lamp to become a place holder of my grandfather’s soul. In Korea, there is a term called, “thorny bed.” It is similar to the expression of “pins and needles” or ‘bed of nails”. It is a place of discomfort and anxiety. By placing him in this spiky pagoda, I am, in a way, confronting him for his absence as a dad and a grandfather. The thrones that he protrudes to the others creates distance between him and his intimate people.
